You can view this document as an interactive outline in Outlinely by selecting Menu > Help > Outlinely Help.
Editing
Outlinely is an outliner in the form of a text editor. In Outlinely, you can move the cursor, enter text, cut, copy and paste, or delete text in the same way as in your favourite text editor.
Expanding and collapsing information
If an item contains sub-content, a circle (●) is displayed to the left of it. Click it to expand or collapse the sub-content.
An ellipsis (⋯) is displayed to the right of a collapsed item. Double-click it to expand.
Adding notes Note is a paragraph of small-sized text, which appears under your main text.
To add a note to your item, you can:
From the main menu, select
Outline >
Add Note.
Right click on the text to open the context menu, and select
Add Note.
Press Option + Command + N (⌥⌘N)
Exit Note Editing mode:
Move the cursor to the end of the note, and press Enter twice.
Or you can just move the cursor to other line.
Adding Completed state
To add or remove Completed state:
From the mani menu, select
Outline >
Mark/Unmark as Done.
Right click on the text to open the context menu, and select
Mark/Unmark as Done.
Press CMD + D (⌘D)
Applying bold, italic formatting to text
Select the text that you want to format.
From the main menu, select
Format >
Font >
Bold /
Italic.
Keyboard shortcut:
To apply bold formatting to your selected, press Command+B.
To apply italic formatting to your selected, press Command+I.
Tagging & Filtering
A tag starts with @ character. Tagging helps you to organize and categorize your outline, seperate important and unimportant information. For example @important, @todo, @someday.
To filter your outline based on a tag, just click on that tag. Outlinely will fold the content as much as possible and display the selected information (lines containing the tag) along with the headline structure above it.
Organizing the outline
Increase/decrease text indents
When you indent/outdent an item, its level is increased/decreased by one. If the item contains sub-items, indent levels of the sub-items are increased/decreased as well.
To increase an indent:
Press Tab or Command + ].
From the main menu, select
Outline >
Indent.
From the context menu, select
Indent.
To decrease an indent:
Press Shift-Tab or Command + [.
From the main menu, select
Outline >
Outdent.
From the context menu, select
Outdent.
Moving items
To move items or a branch of items up or down in the outline, you can use the shortcut keys Option + Command + [ and Option + command + ].
You can also use the key combination Control + Command + Up and Control + Command + Down.
The same features can be accessed from the context menu via
Move Up /
Move Down menu-items.
Drag and drop
To drag a topic, move the mouse cursor to the right side of the topic. A handle will appear when you hover over the right area. Click and drag to move the topic up and down. Release your mouse to drop.
When dragging, move the mouse horizontally to change the indent of the topic, if appropriate.
Focus mode
In Focus mode, Outlinely dims everything other than the current section of text, letting you to concentrate on putting down your thoughts and ideas.
To enable Focus mode:
From the main menu, select View > Focus Mode.
The hotkey to active Focus mode is: Shift + Cmd + D
Zoom
You can zoom into an item’s content and hide all other contents from view using Outlinely’s Zoom feature.
To zoom on an item:
Press Command + Enter.
Or from the main menu, select Outline > Zoom In.
Or select Zoom In from the Context menu.
Changing the outline’s styles
Click the “aA” button on the top-right of the window to open the Style panel. This panel enables you to:
Change the font style for the outline. Note: Outlinely only uses fonts that have bold/italic variants.
Increase or decrease font height.
Change color theme.
Saving
To save your outline, press Command+S or select
File >
Save from the main menu.
You can choose to save your outline in Outlinely format, or OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) format.
Exporting
Outlinely supports exporting to the following formats: OPML, PDF, HTML, Microsoft Word (DOC), Rich-Text-Format (RTF), Markdown or plain-text.
